The Benaulim Congress Block has called for a permanent solution to the pollution affecting the River Sal, while questioning the recent beautification work undertaken at Khareband.
The block said there is an urgent need to identify and stop all sources releasing raw sewage into the river.
Addressing a press briefing, members questioned the intent behind the beautification project.
“There was a big fanfare at the renovation of the River Sal, but we are wondering if the issue of pollution is really addressed or just a gimmick. Further down the route, a net was put up to prevent people from dumping garbage, but today it is breaking and falling into the river,” said Keith Gracias.
Paul Lobo said the river was once the lifeline of Salcete. “We swam and caught fish in it, but the condition of the river today is very sad. The new generation is seeing the Sal in a pathetic state. There is a garden along the river, but it appears cosmetic as we still have to hold our noses while passing by. The river is dying and has become poisonous at a rapid rate,” he said.
He said the sources of sewage entering the river must be traced.
“Are they discharging untreated sewage from the Navelim STP? Our MLAs and ministers are raising the issue in the assembly, but there is no proper discussion. We ask the MLA to be serious and stop temporary measures. Without water and food, we cannot survive. Tourists are saying they have to think twice before coming to the state because of water pollution,” Lobo said.
Solon Furtado referred to pollution data and said figures from November 2025 showed faecal E coli levels at 1,700 MPN at the Khareband junction and 780 MPN at Orlim, against the normal value of 100 MPN.
“These values are very alarming and indicate an emergency situation. It is advisable not to consume fish from the River Sal. Colva creek also has very high values. Five years are coming up and what steps have been taken to safeguard this river. Creating a garden will not solve the problem. The sources of pollution must be identified and the release of raw sewage stopped, which will solve most of the problem,” he said.
