Cite open defecation nuisance, water issues
Mapusa: Upset over delayed action against alleged illegal slums, Verla Canca residents on Sunday demanded demolition, citing nuisance and water-related issues, prompting the gram sabha to pass a resolution for immediate action.
Villagers, including Sushant Parab and Marianne Sequeira, raised the issue of illegal migrants building huts in open areas, alleging nuisance such as open defecation and burning of plastic. They said that despite repeatedly raising the issue, the activities were continuing, causing hardship to local residents.
Sarpanch Aarti Naik said both parties were called for a meeting, during which time was granted till March 1 for voluntary removal of the illegal structures. She said they had failed to comply. Naik assured that the illegal huts would be demolished by following due procedure. A resolution was accordingly passed to take immediate action.
Following villagers’ demand, the panchayat also decided to hold a special meeting with the MLA and drinking water department officials to resolve water issues in the village, along with a separate special meeting to discuss budget provisions for 2026-27.
Villagers also raised concerns over a closed water nullah in Canca, claiming it was partially blocked and choked at multiple locations. They said the Water Resources Department had issued a notice to the panchayat to act against encroachments. The panchayat said the WRD had been asked to share a list, following which action would be taken.
Residents questioned the status of a playground marked in the Regional Plan, stating that the project has remained pending for the past five to six years. Panch member Vasudev Korgaonkar said the panchayat is not the owner of the property and the land is not in its possession. He said the matter would be taken up with the Sports Minister and department, and a committee was formed to follow up on the issue.
