In a move to strengthen action against caste-based atrocities and ensure justice for marginalised communities, the District Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, South Goa, directed that all pending cases under the Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 must be disposed of strictly within the stipulated legal time frame to ensure timely justice for victims.

The committee held a meeting to review the implementation of the Act.

In the meeting chaired by South Goa Collector and committee chairperson Egna Cleetus, officials were instructed to ensure strict compliance with all provisions of the Act.

The Superintendent of Police said that no fresh cases were registered in the current year, while two cases from the previous year have already seen chargesheets filed. Additionally, the District Legal Services Authority said it has conducted awareness programmes to inform citizens about their rights under the Act, and compensation has been provided to victims.

South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes, Superintendent of Police South Goa Santosh Dessai, and officials from the Social Welfare Department were also present.
