Few takers for ‘Mhaje Ghar’, govt receives 1,284 applications

Despite the hype created and the number of events held to create awareness on the scheme, the government has received only 1,284 applications from across the state for regularising houses/structures under the much-debated Mhaje Ghar Scheme.

According to the data tabled in the recently concluded winter session of the state legislative assembly, these 1,284 applications received under the scheme are in five categories – with regard to structures on government land, comunidade land, under Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act, pre-1972 houses and houses under 20-Point Programme.

Data provided by Revenue Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate on the applications received under the scheme from the North Goa, South Goa districts and the newly created Kushavati district indicates that the response to the scheme has been poor so far, contrary to the expectations.

A total of 625 applications have been filed in North Goa in the five categories under the scheme. For regularising houses on government land, five applications have been filed from Tiswadi taluka, while 22 are from Bicholim and four applications have been filed from Sattari taluka.

With regard to regularising houses on comunidade land, only four applications have been filed in North Goa of which three are from Pernem and one from Bicholim. Under Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act, a total of 159 applications have been filed in North, of which 33 are from Tiswadi, 40 from Bicholim, 52 from Pernem and 34 from Bardez.

Under the pre-1972 houses category, 323 applications have been filed in North Goa, of which 52 are from Tiswadi taluka, 58 from Bicholim, 32 from Sattari, 137 from Pernem and 44 from
Bardez.

A total of 108 applications have been filed in North Goa under the 20-point programme category, of which 86 are from Tiswadi, nine from Bicholim, five from Pernem and eight from Bardez.

In South Goa district, 413 applications

have been filed under the scheme in four categories. No application has been received by the government from the district for regularising houses on comunidade land.

Four applications have been received from Mormugao taluka for regularising houses on government land. Under Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act, 62 applications have been received, of which eight are from Mormugao, two from Ponda and 52 from Salcete.

Under the pre-1972 houses category, 131 applications have been received from South, of which 12 are from Mormugao, 48 from Ponda and 71 from Salcete, while under the 20-point programme category, 216 applications have been received, of which 15 are from Mormugao, 145 from Ponda and 56 from Salcete.

A total of 246 applications have been received by the government from Kushavati district under four categories.  Only two applications have been received for regularising houses on government land and these are from Sanguem taluka.

Under Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Act category, a total of 68 applications have been received, of which six are from Sanguem, 55 from Quepem and seven are from Canacona.

Seventy one applications have been received from Kushavati under the pre-1972 houses category, of which 17 are from Sanguem, six from Dharbandora, 35 from Quepem and 13 from Canacona.

Under the 20-point programme category, a total of 105 applications have been received, of which 33 are from Sanguem, 14 from Dharbandora, 34 from Quepem and 24 from Canacona. No application has been received from the district for regularisation of houses on comunidade land.

The Mhaje Ghar Scheme was launched by Union Minister for Home Affairs and Co-operation Amit Shah on October 4, 2025, during an event organised at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee indoor stadium on Taleigao plateau.
