Expressing deep sorrow over the death of 25 people in the fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub at Arpora, the Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT), a church supported body, termed the tragedy “an outcome of criminal negligence “ by government authorities responsible for licensing and monitoring commercial establishments.

In a statement issued by executive secretary Fr Freddy Braganca, CRT conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families and said it stood in solidarity with them during what it described as a dark period. The organisation also extended support to those undergoing treatment in hospitals for serious burn injuries sustained in the incident.

CRT alleged that the fire was the result of acts of omission and commission by government agencies and business operators, accusing them of prioritising profits over human lives. The organisation said the tragedy reflected a complete disregard for safety protocols and public welfare, endangering not only workers and visitors at the establishment but also local communities in the surrounding areas.

Strongly condemning what it called gross negligence and irresponsible behaviour by authorities at multiple levels, CRT said the lack of concern and failure to enforce safety norms had led to an unimaginable loss of life and property.
It demanded a thorough, impartial and transparent inquiry into the incident, with accountability fixed on all those responsible for
the lapses.

CRT also called on the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such tragedies in the future and to provide adequate lifetime support to the affected families. It urged the government to ensure justice and to strictly enforce safety measures during the
licensing process and
while granting no-objection certificates to commercial establishments.
