In a bid to modernise its operations and improve efficiency, the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) has announced plans to transform all four of its depots into a fully digitised Integrated Depot Management System (IDMS).

The initiative, currently in its pilot phase, is designed to bring every operational aspect of the public transport utility onto a
single digital platform.

KTCL General Manager Mahendra Pednekar said the digitisation process had already begun with the store and purchase section on a pilot basis at the Porvorim depot. “We can now track every consumable item used in our buses. We can monitor stock levels, service status, spare-part usage, vehicle health, staff allocation. The system records when the last service was done and when the next is due. Ticketing and routes too have been digitised. The next step is to integrate all four depots so that operations can be managed at our fingertips,” Pednekar said.

The IDMS is envisaged as a centralised framework covering inventory management, vehicle maintenance, scheduling, ticketing, fuel management, human resource deployment and real-time operational dashboards. By consolidating these functions, KTCL hopes to reduce inefficiencies, cut costs and deliver better services
to commuters.

Explaining the roadmap, Pednekar said the project would move cautiously. “We’re not rushing into it. The pilot will inform the requirements which will be followed by a detailed technical evaluation to assess our needs. Only after that a full-fledged integration is taken up. Based on the results of the pilot, a tender will be floated and an agency appointed to implement IDMS across all
depots,” he said.

Several state transport undertakings, including those in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka, have already adopted similar digital depot management systems with significant success, reducing breakdowns and improving revenue monitoring. KTCL aims to replicate those models while tailoring them to Goa’s requirements.

“The ultimate goal is to make KTCL more efficient and passenger-friendly,” Pednekar said. “Technology will help us reduce downtime, increase reliability, and serve the public better.”
