Panaji: The state witnessed light to heavy pre-monsoon rainfall on Sunday, which was accompanied by lightning and thundershowers and brought respite from the persistent summer heat and humidity.

There was intense rain spell in some pockets of Goa. A yellow alert remains active due to expected thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Forecasts suggested continued pre-monsoon activity with a potential for heavy downpours.

The India Meteorological Department expressed optimism about the forthcoming rainy season in Goa, stating that the state is likely to receive normal monsoon this year.

The onset of monsoon over Goa can be really tricky, as it does not progress linearly. It can slow down and stay at Karwar.

Or the rainfall can advance over the entire west coast of India in a couple of days, depending on the surrounding synoptic conditions.

According to the IMD, conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman Islands and Andaman Sea, and some parts of eastcentral Bay of Bengal during the next two-three days.

The southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26 with a model error of ± four days. A trough/wind discontinuity now runs from the cyclonic circulation over west Vidarbha and neighbourhood to Gulf of Mannar across Marathawada, interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
