The state government said that backlog vacancies reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs) across various departments stand at 216, even as tribal organisations have claimed otherwise.
The reply tabled by Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar in the recently concluded session of the Goa Legislative Assembly said that the backlog of vacancies for Scheduled Tribes stand at 216.
According to tribal organisations, the backlog vacancies reserved for
STs exceed 1,500.
An analysis of the Assembly data shows that while over half of the listed departments reported nil backlogs, vacancies are concentrated in a few key sectors. The Public Works Department, with 16 vacancies including 10 posts of assistant engineers, and the Goa Medical College and Hospital, with 29 vacancies, together account for a significant share, particularly in nursing, engineering and clerical cadres.
The Commercial Tax Department alone has 17 vacancies, including posts of Assistant State Tax Officer and State Tax Inspector.
In the education sector, Goa University has 11 vacancies across teaching and administrative positions, with authorities opting to re-advertise posts. The Directorate of Education has also reported pending vacancies for teaching and clerical posts.
The reply stated that senior-level vacancies persist in the Goa Police Department and the Department of Personnel, including posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police, largely due to a lack of eligible candidates in feeder cadres and procedural constraints.
Several departments, in their reply, said vacancies have been referred to the Goa Staff Selection Commission and Goa Public Service Commission for recruitment. However, reasons cited for the continuation of the backlog include limited availability of eligible candidates, delays in recruitment processes and promotion-related bottlenecks, underscoring the need for focused capacity-building measures.
