In an effort to ensure reliable broadband connectivity to households across Goa and as a step towards strengthening digital infrastructure by expanding the reach of high-speed internet, the state government has initiated the Har Ghar Fibre – FTTH (Fibre to the Home) project.

Estimated to cost Rs 38.70 crore, the project will involve building critical telecom infrastructure to deliver fibre-based internet connectivity directly to homes.

As a part of the rollout, Goa Information Technology Development Corporation (GITDC) has floated tender inviting agencies to undertake the design, laying, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of a statewide underground optical fibre cable (OFC) network. The selected agency will be required to complete the work within 240 days, including the monsoon period.

Officials from the information technology (IT) department said that the initiative forms a key component of the state government’s strategy to create a robust digital backbone that can support the growing demand for internet connectivity, digital governance and emerging technology-driven sectors.

The officials said that the Har Ghar Fibre project is intended to improve broadband availability, particularly in areas where access to high-speed internet remains limited.

According to the department officials, the tender process will be conducted through the state’s e-procurement portal, with qualified contractors required to demonstrate experience in laying underground telecom infrastructure and executing large-scale fibre network projects. The project will involve trenching, ducting and installation of optical fibre cables across multiple locations in the state.

The officials said that the initiative aligns with the ongoing connectivity programmes at both, the state and national levels. Under the amended BharatNet project of the Government of India, BSNL will be providing internet connectivity to 191 gram panchayats, ensuring that rural communities gain improved access to the digital services.

At the same time, the Goa government’s Public WiFi project has already established WiFi hotspots across all constituencies in the state, providing citizens access to high-speed internet in public areas.
