High-support PwDs can now avail `40,000 support every five years

The state government on Monday introduced its new scheme for persons with benchmark disabilities requiring high support, focusing not only on

financial assistance but also on giving families greater control over the support their children and dependents receive.

“People with benchmark disabilities and high support needs will be given Rs 40,000 once every five years. With this amount, they can get assistive technologies, aids, appliances, personal care assistance services, and educational or vocational support. They have full freedom to use this Rs 40,000,” said Minister for Social Welfare Subhash Phal Dessai.

Goa whose annual family income does not exceed

Rs 8 lakh.

A certificate issued by the newly formed medical boards at North Goa District Hospital, South Goa District Hospital, Goa Medical College, and the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour is required to apply for the scheme.

“The department has already sanctioned assistance for three beneficiaries,” said Phal Dessai.

He also said that beneficiaries will continue to receive necessary devices and support, even if they are already receiving assistive devices or pensions.

“This scheme is important because it is not restricted only to aids and appliances. Parents or guardians can use it for various therapeutic interventions. If a child needs physiotherapy, speech therapy, or any kind of therapy, this money can be used. It can also be used for vocational assistance. If someone wants to start a small business, this money can be used for that purpose,” said commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Guruprasad Pawaskar.
