The newly inaugurated Government Hospital and Research Centre, Tuem, continues to function in a limited capacity more than two months after its inauguration.

The facility was inaugurated on February 2 while still incomplete. Despite being officially linked to Goa Medical College (GMC), it continues to function at the level of a CHC, falling short of expectations for a higher-tier medical facility.

“The hospital was expected to begin full-fledged operations from the outset. However, it is currently limited to outpatient department (OPD) services,” said adv Prasad Shahapurkar, a member of the Tuem Hospital Kruti Samiti.

Shahapurkar said these OPD services were already available at the existing Community Health Centre (CHC) and had merely been relocated. “No additional facilities have been made operational,” he said.

Additionally, tenders have been issued for crucial components such as the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), medical gas pipeline system, modular operation theatres and X-ray machine installation. However, work orders have yet to be executed.

“Essential services, including a fully functional mortuary, are also pending. While the mortuary has been handed over to the CHC, it is not yet operational and is awaiting testing,” Shahapurkar said.

Devendra Prabhudesai, another member of the  Samiti, said patients are
still being referred to the North Goa District Hospital or GMC.

Sources said a mini operation theatre has reportedly been set up within the blood bank section.
even as dedicated OT facilities remain under construction.
