Over the ongoing issue of untreated sewage inflow at Carrem in Socorro, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on Thursday directed the Deputy Collector to take legal action to stop the nuisance caused by the release of sewage into a property and asked the police not to allow sewage tankers in the locality.

Khaunte inspected the site along with the Socorro panchayat body, local residents, and officials.

Local resident Melchier Pinto Do Rosario had lodged a complaint with various authorities, stating that untreated raw sewage was being released onto a property and had flowed down into his own. He said this posed a public nuisance as well as environmental and health hazards, demanding immediate action. Locals claimed that an unidentified person had been behind the release
of sewage.

During inspection, it was found that a large quantity of raw sewage had been released into a property, which then flowed into Pinto Do Rosario’s land and flooded it.

After the inspection, Khaunte said, “Since the past eight months, we had received various complaints from this area regarding sewage. Recently, Pinto Do Rosario recorded a video of his property, which was alarming. It is a health hazard and soil contamination can also be a problem for all of us,” Khaunte said.

He said that earlier there was a “big scam” linked to the land, which belonged to the comunidade but was reverted. “We asked comunidade officials to take back possession of land,” he said.
