Tourism activity along the coastal belt of Salcete continued as usual even as local residents turned out
to vote in the Zilla Panchayat elections on Saturday, with most visitors saying the polling-related restrictions had little impact on their plans.

Many tourists said they were aware of the elections and the rule prohibiting the sale of liquor for the day. A young couple from Pune, visiting Goa on holiday, said the elections did not affect their trip.

“We knew the ZP elections would be happening in the state and we’re not drinkers, so we’re able to enjoy Goa for all the other beautiful things it has to offer,” they said.

Foreign tourists also said they were largely unaffected by the restrictions. One visitor cycling to the Colva beach said he had been informed a day in advance by staff at a local beach shack where he usually ate. A UK tourist staying in Cavelossim said the temporary restriction did not dampen the holiday experience.

“It’s always lovely to visit Goa. And it is also good to see that people are interested in local elections. I think it’s a good sign of democracy. It’s okay if there’s no alcohol
for one day. We will still enjoy the nice, quiet beach that we look forward to,” the tourist said.

Some domestic tourists who were unaware of the liquor ban were seen looking puzzled at the closure of liquor stores in the area. Notices displayed at most outlets announcing the closure due to the elections helped clarify the situation.

Elsewhere along the beaches, tourists continued to enjoy their stay, with some taking part in watersports, others sampling Goan cuisine and many simply relaxing by the sea.
