Unai Emery’s men sink Freiburg 3-0 to clinch first European title in 44 years
Istanbul: Aston Villa claimed their first European trophy in 44 years and a maiden UEFA Europa League title as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed an emphatic win against Freiburg.
After both sides traded half chances in a cagey opening, Tielemans broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, volleying home from Morgan Rogers’ delivery following a short corner routine. Freiburg suffered another blow moments later when Buendia cut inside from outside the box and curled a superb left-footed strike into the far corner on the stroke of halftime.
Unai Emery’s men sealed the contest just before the hour mark as Buendia surged down the left flank and squared for Rogers to finish from close range.
Amadou Onana later struck the post for Villa, while Freiburg failed to mount a comeback despite a spirited effort. The German side will feature in next season’s Conference League play-offs.
