The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa, has granted conditional bail to Raghavendr Sannagoudr (26), a native of Karnataka, who was arrested by Calangute Police for allegedly assaulting a police officer on duty and damaging a government vehicle.
The accused was released on a personal bond of
Rs 25,000 with one local surety in the like amount.
During the hearing, the prosecution opposed the bail application, stating that the accused had committed a serious offence by assaulting a police inspector on duty and damaging a government vehicle belonging to Calangute police station.
The prosecution further said that the investigation is at a preliminary stage and the custodial presence of the accused was required to ascertain whether he was involved in any other offences.
It also expressed apprehension that, as the accused is a native of Karnataka with no roots in Goa, he may abscond if released on bail.
The court noted the prosecution’s apprehension that the accused, being from another state, might jump bail and not be available for trial.
“Being a resident of another state is not a legal ground for denial of bail. The Court may impose conditions such as furnishing a permanent address, sureties, reporting to the police, or sharing mobile details to secure attendance and take care of the said apprehensions of the investigating officer,” the court said in
its order.
