The Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) has announced a survey to collect data on stray dogs, pet dogs and stray cattle found along roads and highways within its jurisdiction, following directions from the
High Court.
The survey follows an order dated September 10 in suo motu petition.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, VMC chief officer Dhiren D Banavaliker urged animal feeders, handlers and volunteers from all 10 municipal wards to assist survey teams by providing information about stray and pet dogs and stray cattle in their respective areas by September 25.
The exercise will map the stray dog population and identify unsterilised and unvaccinated dogs, besides creating a baseline database for community safety and animal welfare measures.
Residents and volunteers have also been asked to provide information on the health and vaccination status of street dogs and their territorial movement. The information will help authorities identify and enumerate the animals while avoiding duplication.
The civic body clarified that no animal would be captured, displaced or harmed during the data-collection exercise and appealed to residents to cooperate with the survey teams.
Meanwhile, the presence of stray cattle and monkeys foraging through waste around overflowing garbage bins in Valpoi has raised concerns over waste management and animals straying into public spaces.
