A 40-year-old man allegedly slit his wife’s throat at their rented room in Saligao on Friday afternoon and later walked into the police station with his minor son and surrendered. The accused, Vinod Rathod (40), a native of Karnataka, has been arrested for the murder of his wife, Rukmini Rathod (36), a mother of three.

Saligao police have registered a case of murder.

The case came to light after Rathod went to Saligao Police Station, admitted to the crime and surrendered. A police team then went to the rented premises and found Rukmini’s body inside the room covered with a sheet.

Police said that initial investigation revealed that the motive behind murder was family dispute and financial strain between husband and wife. In a fit of anger, Rathod slit his wife’s throat with a knife, resulting in her death, said police. After the incident, he left the body in the room and went to bring the children from school. He first dropped his two daughters at his sister-in-law’s house and then took his younger son from school before proceeding to the police station to surrender.

Police conducted a panchanama and shifted the body to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) for autopsy. SP Vishwesh Karpe and SP North Harishchandra Madkaikar visited the spot.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother, Vitthal Lamani.

Police sources said Rukmini had moved to Muddowaddo in Saligao around three months ago and was living in the rented room with her three children.
