The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said the southwest monsoon advanced over the entire state along with additional parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, marking a significant step in its northward progress across the country.

“The southwest monsoon has further advanced into entire Goa and some more parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, most parts of Tamil Nadu and southwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of west-central and northeast Bay of Bengal, entire east-central Bay of Bengal and parts of Mizoram and Manipur today, June 6, 2026,” the IMD stated in its latest bulletin.

The monsoon missed Goa’s climatological onset date of June 5 by a day. The delay is relatively minor compared to several recent years when the state had to wait much longer.

The onset has been accompanied by increasing rainfall activity in Goa. According to IMD data, Goa recorded an area-weighted average rainfall of 16.7 mm on June 6.

The normal rainfall is 15.5 mm; this represents a surplus of 7.6 per cent.

However, cumulative rainfall from June 1 to June 6 stood at 51.5 mm compared to the normal 75.6 mm, leaving the state with a seasonal deficit of 31.8 per cent. North Goa received 52.6 mm against a normal of 74.8 mm, while South Goa recorded 50.5 mm against a normal 76.2 mm.

The weather office has forecast thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds over Goa during the next two days.
