Now, register land, marriage anywhere in Goa

In a novel move, the state government will, in a fortnight, introduce ‘anywhere registration’ for both, land and marriage registration in the state.

This means that a person from Pernem will be able to register his or her marriage in Canacona sub registrar office. This will be applicable also in case of land registration.

A related announcement was made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in his budget speech for the financial year 2024-25.

The initiative will allow the citizens to complete the registration processes at any civil registrar’s office across the state rather than being restricted to a specific local jurisdiction. The measure aims to enhance citizen convenience and streamline government services.

The ‘anywhere registration’ for land documents is facilitated by the National Generic Document Registration System (NGDRS), which has already been implemented in the state, allowing documents to be processed in a digital format.

Currently, marriages must be registered at the office of Civil Registrar-cum-Sub-Registrar in the specific taluka (sub-district) where at least one of the parties has resided for a period of not less than 30 days immediately preceding the date of application. Similarly, for land registration, documents for property transactions must be registered with the Sub-Registrar in whose jurisdiction the property or a part of it is situated.

On Monday, Sawant, who also holds the law portfolio, held a meeting with senior officials of the registration department, sub registrars and other officials concerned. He said several pending issues in the registration department were resolved during the meeting.

“As part of the budget announcement, the government will soon introduce anywhere registration for marriage and land registration in Goa,” the Chief Minister said.
