Upset over the recurring problem of non-functional ferry boats on the Marcaim–Cortalim route, passengers and locals are demanding the introduction of Ro-Ro ferry service on this route, which is one of the longest ferry routes in the state.

According to available information, the Marcaim–Cortalim ferry route spans approximately 45 minutes across the Zuari River. Currently, two ferry boats operate on this route, but one of them frequently develops mechanical issues, leading to chaos and congestion for passengers.

On Tuesday, one of the ferries suffered a breakdown around 8 am and remained out of service until 4 pm, causing major inconvenience to commuters. Office goers and students were delayed as a result of the disruption. Locals pointed out that such frequent service interruptions have become a common occurrence, and they have renewed their demand for Ro-Ro ferry service on this route.

Marcaimsarpanch Shailesh Panjikar said that out-of-service ferries, traffic jams, and chaos have become a routine sight at the Marcaim ferry point. He said that despite a noticeable increase in traffic movement, the government has not yet taken any steps to upgrade ferry services in the area.

“This is one of the longest ferry routes in Goa with heavy daily traffic. The government should introduce Ro-Ro ferry service not just for better services but also for passenger safety. Alternatively, the number of ferries on this route should be increased to avoid inconvenience to the people,” Panjikar said.
