More than a year after work began, the much-awaited 40 KLD effluent treatment plant for the Mapusa municipal market awaits approval from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
The effluent treatment plant is expected to address the long-standing issue of untreated wastewater discharge from the Mapusa fish and meat market complex. The existing system has been unable to handle the wastewater, leading to untreated effluents being released into public drains, which eventually flow into the Mapusa Tar River, causing pollution.
Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Priya Mishal said that civil work on the 40 KLD plant is complete. “Further processes will be taken up once we receive approval from Goa State Pollution Control Board, for which we have already applied,” she said. Municipal officials said that civil work on the plant has been completed, but its operation is pending due to the required clearance.
The municipality had proposed the establishment
of a mini-sewage treatment plant for the fish and meat complex in 2017. However, delays plagued the project, and the foundation
stone was finally laid in February 2024.
The project, awarded to a Pune-based company, is estimated to cost Rs 60.61 lakh.
