Panaji : In a morale booster to the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Goa’s women-led efforts in waste management, during his Mann ki Baat address to the nation.

In the 124th broadcast of Mann ki Baat, Modi spoke about the Swachh Bharat Mission and appreciated the contribution of women in sorting waste of Panaji city.

“In Panaji, waste is divided into 16 categories, and it is being led by women,” he said.

“Panaji has even received the President’s award. Cleanliness is not a one-time, one-day task. Only when we accord priority to cleanliness every day, every moment of the year, will the country remain clean,” said Modi, during the address, where he talked about the Swachh Bharat Mission and about the women in Bilha, Chhattisgarh, who were trained in waste management as well as the women in Panaji who

segregate waste.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, taking to X soon after the broadcast, thanked Modi for mentioning Goa’s waste management efforts. Sawant congratulated the women for leading the way in waste management.

“Their dedication has not only transformed Panaji’s cleanliness standards but has also earned the city the prestigious Rashtrapati Puraskar,” he wrote on X.

“This recognition inspires us to continue working towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Goa,” Sawant added.

Panaji received the Cleanest City tag at the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25. The award was presented by President of India Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane alongside CCP mayor Rohit Monserrate had accepted the award.

Panaji  got awarded as the  Cleanest City in the 20,000 to 50,000 population category. The city got recognition for its significant efforts in maintaining cleanliness, waste management, and public sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Sankhali  had bagged the Promising Swachh Shehar State-Level Award in the same survey.
