Mapusa

Mapusa police have registered a murder case in connection with the death of 63-year-old Subhash Naik, a resident of Cunchelim.

The offence has been registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Based on preliminary evidence, two persons, Aaron Fernandes (22) and Ramprasad Guinn (43), both residents of Cunchelim, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Family members said the post-mortem examination revealed that Naik sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, broken nose and ribs, along with multiple internal injuries. Police have preserved the viscera for further forensic analysis as part of the investigation.

Naik’s family had raised suspicion over the nature of his death, citing the extent of injuries. Following support from locals, a formal complaint was lodged, prompting police action. The family has sought a thorough investigation.

After completion of medical and legal formalities, Naik’s body was handed over to the family, and his last rites were performed on Saturday.

The developments follow an incident on Friday when Mapusa police intervened and took custody of Naik’s body shortly before the funeral procession, after concerns of possible foul play were raised by locals.

Naik had initially been admitted to the district hospital on Thursday and was later shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. He was subsequently brought back to the district hospital, where he died on Friday afternoon.

Later, as funeral preparations were underway at his residence in Cunchelim, a group of locals raised objections and created a commotion, alleging that the death may not have been natural.

This led to police intervention and further investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
