Benaulim AAP MLA Venzy Viegas on Saturday said citizens must question the government over their rights, while raising concerns over land conversion, paper leaks and the state of health and education.
Speaking after unfurling the national flag at his office on Independence Day, Viegas said, “For 79 years the national flag is being unfurled every year. The first time this flag was unfurled, citizens were promised freedom and told that they were the
masters of their destiny, equality. But today as we stand here, do we have equality, freedom and right to dignity? I think we are still struggling.”
He said citizens still
desire what was promised to them.
“Our lands, rivers are being sold, fields are getting converted, our students are struggling because of paper leaks. Is this independent India,” he said, urging people to question the government. “We must pledge that enough is enough and that we are going to stand and speak for an independent India.”
A pledge was also taken by those present to stand by constitutional
rights and ensure that the government protects the state’s land, fields, mountains and future generations.
