As people advance in age, memory often begins to fade. Names of near and dear ones slip away, cherished places become difficult to recall, and conversations are interrupted by forgotten words. Yet there are remarkable exceptions.
Ramesh Wagle, also known as Ramakant Wagle, celebrates his 100th birthday on 3 June. Even at this milestone age, he remains remarkably aware of people, events and details that many younger minds would struggle to remember. His sharp recall, warm engagement with others and enduring curiosity continue to surprise and inspire those around him.
A multifaceted personality, Ramesh comes from a family that once stood prominently at the forefront of social, cultural and sporting life. Along with his elder brother Anand, he played an active role in the Nerul Club. Together with like‑minded colleagues and friends, they helped organise Marathi plays during a vibrant period of community activity.
Sports formed an important chapter of his life. Ramesh was a Goa state‑level football player and represented his team in noted local tournaments such as the Saligao Trophy, Tasa Portugal and Parra Cup, to name a few. A smart and dependable goalkeeper, he also captained his team. The sporting spirit that shaped his youth remained with him throughout life. In his dealings with people, he displayed fairness, discipline and camaraderie, building healthy and lasting social relationships.
After completing his education at Lyceum, he entered government service and rose steadily through dedication and competence. Climbing one rung after another, he held important administrative positions including Mamlatdar and Deputy Collector, earning respect through his work and public service.
Today, at 100, Ramesh continues to maintain meaningful friendships and close family bonds. He derives joy from his great‑grandchildren and from the care and affection extended by family and well‑wishers. Their support has brought him comfort and companionship, particularly after the passing of his wife.
While advancing age often brings physical and mental challenges, Ramesh continues to be admired by friends, colleagues and family members for his maturity, humour, resilience and cheerful disposition.
As he enters his centenary year, Ramesh stands as an example of a life well lived — marked by service, sporting spirit, cultural involvement, enduring relationships and unwavering human warmth.
This remarkable and multifaceted personality truly deserves the heartfelt cheers and good wishes of one and all.
