Authorities said all approach roads leading to the Taniya Hotel junction in Vasco will be completely shut for five days from November 17, when the first phase of work on the long-pending railway underpass is scheduled to begin.
Traffic will be fully restored after about a month with proper signage and diversions as other works may continue for that period. The PI (traffic) is expected to release a video explaining the diversion plan to guide motorists.
Multiple components of the project will be taken up simultaneously to avoid future disruptions, said Mormugao deputy collector Bhagwant Karmali, who chaired a joint co-ordination meeting of key government departments to finalise the execution plan.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said the closure is a temporary inconvenience but will lead to long-term benefits.
He said the bridge and widened approach roads will help improve traffic movement, and added that the work is being taken up in a coordinated manner to minimise
disruption.
Officials said the work will include widening the road along with constructing the railway underpass.
Light poles will be relocated, ducts for underground cabling will be laid to prevent the need for future digging, sewage pipelines will be shifted, and provision for a pumping station will be created.
Discussions with the contractor and department heads were held in the presence of railways officials to ensure smooth progress.
Deputy Collector Karmali will oversee the project’s progress.
The new underpass and improvements to adjoining roads are expected to be completed by November 25.
Officials from the PWD, Traffic Cell, Police, Railways, Electricity Department and the municipality attended the meeting, which was also joined by the Vasco MLA.
