Rohit Monserrate, son of Revenue Minister and Panaji MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, is all set to return as the mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji as he filed his nomination for the post.

Vasant Agshikar submitted his nomination for the deputy mayor’s post, which he had held in the past. A special meeting of the newly elected councillors will be held on March 30, 2026, where an announcement on new mayor and deputy mayor will be made.

Friday’s development follows the CCP elections held on March 11, in which the panel backed by Atanasio Monserrate secured a landslide victory.

The panel won 27 out of the 30 wards, leaving the Utpal Parrikar-supported Ami Panjekar panel with just three seats. Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination, Rohit Monserrate indicated that his tenure as mayor this time would be brief.

Rohit Monserrate said he plans to hold the mayor’s post for only six to eight months, as he intends to contest the Goa Assembly elections scheduled in 2027.

“For the next six to eight months, we will try to fulfil the assurances given to voters during the elections,” he said.

When asked about the candidature for the Assembly polls, he said the Revenue Minister has already announced it.

However, the final decision will be taken by the party.

The nominations underline the continuous dominance of the Monserrate-led panel at the CCP. Political observers noted that the strong mandate is likely to ensure stability in the functioning of the corporation, with key civic projects and administrative decisions expected to proceed without major hurdles.
