A San Joao celebration ended in tragedy after a 60-year-old man from Chicalim-Colvale, Krishna Naik, died following an alleged assault by a group of youths over a previous enmity. Four accused — Christopher Paul, 27, a resident of Chicalim-Colvale, and Pratik Naik alias Gawas, 22, a resident of Nadora —were arrested in the early hours of Thursday. Two remaining accused, Stephen Paul and Shravan Shetkar, a resident of Ponda, surrendered on Thursday evening and
were arrested.

Krishna succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Colvale police registered a murder case against Christopher and his brother Stephen, Shravan Shetkar and Pratik Gawas.

The incident occurred at around 5.30 pm on Wednesday in front of the house of Shantaram Dhargalkar at Manshiwado, Chicalim-Colvale. A complaint was lodged by Rupesh Naik.

Sources said the accused had gone to celebrate San Joao and were returning when they entered into an argument with Krishna near his house. The accused, Christopher and Stephen, allegedly had a previous enmity with Krishna. The accused, who were suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, allegedly assaulted Krishna with a wooden stick and also kicked and punched him.

When Rupesh, his brother Mahesh and neighbour Dhargalkar intervened to rescue Krishna, they too were assaulted. Dhargalkar sustained a fracture, while Rupesh and Mahesh suffered injuries. Krishna was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed
to the injuries.

Meanwhile, Christopher and Pratik were produced before the JMFC court in Mapusa, which remanded them to eight days’ police custody.
