Margao

The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the state government and the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) against a High Court (HC) order that had ruled in favour of sanitation workers of MMC.

The development has been welcomed by the Bhimshakti Sangatan, which has been supporting the workers in their legal battle. South Goa president of the organisation Savio Coutinho said the decision reflects the resilience of the sanitation workers.

“The Supreme Court’s decision is a testament to the resilience and determination of these hardworking sanitation workers. They have been subjected to harassment and exploitation, and we are glad that the judiciary has stood by them,” he said.

Snehal Onskar and others, who provided details of the SC order, said the court dismissed the SLP after finding no grounds to interfere with the High Court judgment. The court also condoned the delay in filing the petition and disposed of all pending applications, she said.

The Bhimshakti Sangatan has also appealed to daily wage workers who are being denied permanent status to come forward and seek justice. Coutinho said the judiciary was the “only reliable hope” for such workers and said the organisation would continue to support them in their struggle.
