The chief officer of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Madhu Narvekar, on Thursday said that operations of the newly installed gasification plant at Sonsoddo are likely to begin
on Tuesday.
The plant will employ the gasification method to process mixed solid waste—including plastic, sanitary waste, coconut husks and other materials—and convert them into oil and ash. The ash is utilised for manufacturing bricks.
“We have completed the plant and the requisite trial runs have been conducted. We obtained consent to operate from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) only two days ago. We will likely commence the plant’s operations by Tuesday,” Narvekar told
The Navhind Times.
GSPCB chairman Dr Levinson Martins said that the GSPCB has granted the MMC the necessary consent to operate the plant after its officials conducted an inspection.
The MMC chief officer said that that establishing a waste treatment plant is crucial for the MMC.
“We have made every effort to bring this new technology waste treatment facility into operation,” he said
Margao municipal councillors had approved a 10-tonne-per-day gasification technology plant at the Sonsoddo site at a cost
of Rs 7.2 crore. Of this, Rs 3.7 crore was earmarked for
installation, while Rs 3.5 crore was allocated for five years of operation and maintenance.
The contract was awarded to G D Environmental Private Limited, a Pune-based company, for setting up the gasification plant.
Councillors, along with sanitation committee members of the MMC, had visited the Pune-based company before the documentation process was set in motion.
