In response to growing concerns over linemen safety, the state government will procure 100 smart helmets and smartwatches developed by Goa Engineering College (GEC) for Electricity Department staff, Power Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar said on Wednesday.

The devices are designed to detect live wires and electrical hazards, helping prevent accidents during maintenance work.

Dhavalikar also said that the report on May 20 electrocution of lineman Chandru Gaonkar in Sattari has been submitted to the Chief Electrical Engineer. “After examining the report, the Chief Electrical Engineer will forward it to me within the next two to three days,” he said.

Gaonkar, from Morlem, was electrocuted while working on a transformer at Postwada, Honda. The minister did not specify whether any disciplinary or safety review action would follow

the report.
