The absence of a bus service in ST-dominated areas of Velim constituency and concerns over neglected works by contractors were among the issues raised during the second ordinary meeting of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat (SGZP) on Wednesday.

Velim ZP member Julio Fernandes said his earlier request for a bus service linking the ST-dominated areas of Combeabhatt and Anandbhatt to Margao remains pending despite repeated appeals. He said schoolchildren are forced to travel nearly eight kilometres due to the lack of the service. He also urged the chairperson to pursue his request for a health centre in the village.

“There are unused primary schools; it would be prudent for the government to establish a primary health centre in one of these facilities to cater to the health needs of the local populace,” he said.

Fernandes also brought to the chairperson’s attention that a private doctor charges Rs 3,000 to issue a death certificate for the deceased. The chairperson said he would raise the matter with the Health Minister and attempt to resolve it after verifying
the facts.

Cortalim constituency member Merciana Mendes said contractors in her constituency had neglected works awarded through tenders and appealed for prompt rectification.

Members also suggested that the chairperson seek the assistance of Margao traffic police to secure designated parking spaces for ZP members during their scheduled meetings.
