Panaji: Goa recorded its highest daily average rainfall of the current monsoon season with 161.1 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on July 3, with Dharbandora recording the highest rainfall at 229.4 mm. The cumulative rainfall since June 1 has reached 1027.3 mm (40.44 inches), covering the seasonal deficit.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for July 3 and 4, citing an active off-shore trough along the Maharashtra-Karnataka coast driving intense monsoon conditions across the state.
From June 1 to July 3, North Goa recorded 1026.1 mm of rainfall while South Goa registered 1028.4 mm, against a normal of 1028.5 mm. The current seasonal deficit stands at -0.1%, down from 13% at the end of June.
Dharbandora recorded the highest rainfall at 229.4 mm in the last 24 hours, followed by Old Goa (187.4 mm), Margao (186.0 mm), Mapusa (176.2 mm), Sanguem (174.2 mm), Ponda (169.0 mm), Sankhali (164.4 mm), and Panaji (154.6 mm).
The IMD has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across North and South Goa on July 4, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 50 km/h. A yellow alert will be in place from July 5 to 9, indicating heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
The Fire and Emergency Services Department responded to 119 calls since July 2, mostly related to uprooted trees affecting roads and property. High numbers of calls were reported from Ponda, Mapusa, Panaji, Bicholim, Old Goa, Pernem, and Vasco.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea due to squally weather and high waves along the south Maharashtra-Goa coast until July 7. Local authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during intense rain, avoid flood-prone areas, and remain alert to landslide risks in hilly areas.
