Students working under an internship programme of the Department of Archives have helped conserve around 5,000 pages of manuscripts, as part of an academic collaboration between the department and St Xavier’s College.
Balaji Shenoy, director of Archives, said the collaboration would provide students with practical training in conservation, preservation, archives keeping and records management.
“Under the MoU students will be able to take up internships with the Department of Archives, where they will receive practical, hands-on training in conservation and preservation methods. They will also be trained in archives keeping and records management systems,” he said.
The collaboration will also allow students and teachers to undertake projects related to archival research, with the Department of Archives providing assistance for such projects, Shenoy said.
The department has developed a Short Term Certificate Course on Manuscriptology and Paleography, with special reference to Modi Script, for college students. Under the MoU, students will
be trained to read basic Modi Script.
The collaboration is aimed at helping students understand historical manuscripts housed in the Goa Archives and encouraging research based on primary sources.
Students will also get access to the department’s library collection, which contains rare books, while the department will receive support from students in preserving manuscripts.
The academic collaboration will provide students with practical experience in working with archival material while supporting the preservation of manuscripts and historical
records.
