In the wake of a recent tourist assault incident that raised concerns over visitor safety, Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Karpe held a meeting with shack owners in Calangute where he stressed the shared responsibility of stakeholders in safeguarding Goa’s tourism reputation.

Karpe told shack owners that such incidents damage Goa’s image both nationally and internationally.

“These incidents have far-reaching consequences. They affect the entire tourism industry, not just in Goa but beyond,” he said.

Karpe said that Goa attracts tourists from diverse backgrounds, many of whom associate the destination with leisure and intoxication. “That perception of Goa must be handled responsibly,” he said, urging shack owners not to give unchecked freedom to staff and to strictly follow rules.

“In case of disputes, shack owners should immediately inform police. Do not act impulsively. Wait for the police to take necessary action,” said Karpe.

Shack owners said that in some situations, a single staff member is outnumbered by groups, making it difficult to manage situations until police arrive. They also raised concerns over misconduct involving tourists and female foreign nationals and requested that police patrolling be extended beyond 2 am to strengthen security in busy beach areas.
