Panaji: The Goa Traffic Police has reported a decline in road accidents, with 2,660 incidents in 2024 compared to 2,814 in 2023, marking a 5.47% drop. The department issued 3,03,478 challans to traffic violators, collecting fines totaling Rs 20.53 crore.
A major technological advancement came with the launch of Traffic Response and Congestion Control (TRACK) by the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on August 27. This system has effectively handled 364 social media reports and responded to 1,969 Google Map-based congestion alerts through December 30.
The department took strict action against serious violators, recommending license suspension for 32,536 drivers. Under the Traffic Rules Understanding and Safety Training (TRUST) programme, conducted jointly with the Transport Department, 3,398 traffic violators underwent sensitisation and training.
Community outreach has been extensive, with road safety lectures delivered to 46,765 students and 40,484 drivers. The department utilised social media platforms for awareness campaigns, producing four educational video clips for public circulation.
Looking ahead, Goa Traffic Police is collaborating with BITS Goa to develop mobile applications that will help tourists locate parking spaces and prevent multiple traffic checks of the same vehicle on a single day.
The comprehensive approach combining enforcement, education, and technology has proven effective in improving road safety. The department continues to work with village panchayats and local bodies to extend its public outreach programs, emphasizing the importance of road safety awareness among residents and visitors alike.
