Andhra tourist dies after assault at Calangute shack

Calangute: Tragedy struck a group of eight tourists from Andhra Pradesh after one of them died following an alleged assault by a shack owner, his son and two staffers at Calangute over food order.

The incident occurred in early hours of Tuesday when the group asked the shack staff to place an order for food. However, the shack refused as the premises was closed for the day.

But since the group was hungry, they insisted the staff provide food, a request which was denied. The group then sought to meet the shack owner. This discussion on the placement of the food order led to an verbal and  physical altercation.

As per the complainant, the shack owner, his son and the staff of the shack assaulted Bolla Ravi Teja (28), a resident of West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, with a wooden danda and kicks, causing him head injury due to which he succumbed enroute to a hospital.

Spandan Bollu (27), a resident of Hyderabad-Telangana has lodged a complaint at the Calangute police station.

The complainant stated that the accused persons also assaulted him and his friends Chaitanya Gopi Pandapu (25), Kairam Giridhar (27) and Deepak Satyanarayana (22), all natives of Andhra Pradesh with wooden danda, kicks and slaps causing them injuries.

One of the accused allegedly damaged the mobile phone of one group member Satyavarshini when she tried to record the incident on her phone.

As per the complainant, the deceased was hit while he was trying to save the girls being attacked.

The police have registered an offence against shacks owner Agnel Silveira (64), his son Shubert (23) and two workers Anil Bista (24) and Kamal Sunar (23), both hailing from Nepal and residing in Calangute and placed them under arrest under Section 103, Section 118 (causing hurt or grievous injuries using dangerous weapons) and 324(3) (committing mischief leading to loss or damage of property) read with Section 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS Act, 2023.

Police have moved a letter to cancel the licence of the shack.
