Under the ‘Revitalising the central business districts/historic core of major cities’ reform of the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2025-26, the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has proposed the ‘Integrated infrastructure development of Vasco historic core’ project to the Centre, seeking Rs 140 crore for development across various Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) wards.
The project has been approved, said Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane during the inauguration of the newly reconstructed Vasco fish market.
The project aims to revitalise Vasco’s historic urban fabric by restoring heritage areas, re-organising public spaces, enhancing pedestrianisation, improving economic viability, and developing blue-green spaces. The Vasco Fish Market, built at a cost of Rs 9.80 crore under 14th Finance Commission grants, features 250 fish vendors on the ground floor with eight fish-cutting platforms and 12 dry fish vendors plus 40 vegetable and fruit vendors on the first floor. The facility is equipped with toilets, lifts, CCTV surveillance, and fire safety systems.
Rane also laid the foundation stone for the beautification of Swatantra Path and F L Gomes Road (Phase-I) under the IDMT scheme, a
Rs 11.84-crore project covering 1.2 km, which includes upgraded stormwater drains, footpaths, landscaping, and improved pedestrian safety and lighting. Additionally, Urban Health and Wellness Centres at Vasco Gymkhana and Sada, built at Rs 21 lakh each, were inaugurated.
Rane credited MLA Krishna Salkar for driving development in Vasco, with Minister Mauvin Godinho noting rapid progress in the Dabolim constituency. Salkar said the new fish market fulfills a 30-year demand of citizens and expressed confidence that Vasco will witness unprecedented development with continued support from the state government.
