Margao to have 24 councillors, Mormugao 21; most councils remain unchanged

Panaji: The Goa State Election Commission (SEC) has notified the number of councillors to be elected across 11 municipal councils for the municipal elections later this year, with marginal changes in Mormugao and Margao.

The number of wards in Mormugao Municipal Council has been reduced from 25 to 21, while Margao Municipal Council will see a reduction from 25 to 24.

As per an order issued by State Election Commissioner Menino D’Souza on Wednesday, Margao will have the highest representation with 24 councillors, followed by Mormugao with 21 and Mapusa with 20.

Among other municipalities, Curchorem-Cacora will have 15 councillors, while Bicholim and Cuncolim will have 14 each. Quepem has been assigned 13 seats and Canacona 12, while Valpoi, Pernem and Sanguem will have 10 councillors each.

The SEC has also classified municipalities based on size and urban profile. Margao and Mormugao fall under A Class, while Mapusa, Curchorem-Cacora, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Quepem and Canacona are categorised as B Class. Valpoi, Pernem and Sanguem fall under C Class.

Compared to the previous municipal elections, councillor strength in most councils remains unchanged. However, Margao has seen a slight reduction, while Mormugao has recorded a sharper drop in seats.

The changes are in line with updated population data and ward rationalisation norms. The notification is expected to pave the way for further election processes, including ward delimitation finalisation and reservation of seats.

The schedule for civic body elections in Goa is likely to be announced by the SEC soon.
