The state government will introduce a bill soon to ban ferocious dog breeds Pitbull and Rottweiler, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday.

Stating that the bill will be brought in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly, scheduled to commence on July 21, Sawant said the cabinet has given its nod to introduce the Goa Animal Breeding, Domestication and Regulation and Compensation Bill, 2025.

Speaking to media after the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said, “The bill proposing to ban dog breeds like Pitbull and Rottweiler will be introduced in the upcoming assembly session.” He, however, did not elaborate on the provisions of the upcoming bill.

It may be noted that in August 2024, a seven-year-old boy was mauled to death by an unleashed Pitbull in Anjuna, following which the dog owner was booked for negligence.

In January this year, a 40-year-old man was attacked in Assagao by a Rottweiler, allegedly left unleashed by its owner, leaving the man injured and shaken. The dog’s owner was booked by Anjuna police for reckless endangerment.

Incidents of dangerous dog breeds attacking people have been documented elsewhere in the country too. In a disturbing incident in Ahmedabad, a four-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by a pet Rottweiler after it broke free from its owner’s control at a residential society in May.

Meanwhile, the cabinet also granted its approval to introduce the Goa Factories and Boilers (amendment) Bill, 2025.
