A goldsmith from Margao, Soham Raikar, sustained head injuries on Tuesday after a failed robbery attempt at his jewellery shop located at Borda. Raikar is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6.30 pm when a man walked into the jewellery shop claiming that he wanted to sell his mother’s gold ornaments.
The unsuspecting employees were caught unaware when the man removed a hammer from a bag instead of gold ornaments and assaulted Raikar. Despite sustaining injuries, Raikar got into a scuffle with the accused as the accused tried to attack him with a knife, said police.
As both tried to gain control of each other, the accused accidentally dropped the knife and managed to escape from the scene.
Police arrived at the crime scene soon after they were informed about the incident. Collection of evidence was underway at the time of going to press. No jewellery was stolen from the shop. Police were in the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) against the unknown man late night.
