Navelim Villagers Union defeated USC Seraulim 5-3 in a tense tie-breaker to reach the semi-finals of the 19th Super Soccer Tournament at St John the Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Monday.
Despite playing with a man down, Navelim held Seraulim to a goalless draw in regulation time. They then converted all five penalties to seal a remarkable victory.
Despite starting the match with a player less, Navelim showed resilience and nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Velito Costa’s header, from a long cross by Velon Rebello, hit the post. Ronaldo Pereira also came close with a powerful strike, but it was kept out by Seraulim keeper Roynell Pereira.
In the second half, Seraulim applied constant pressure but could not break through Navelim’s disciplined defence. The game ended goalless at full-time.
In the tie-breaker, Navelim showed composure, converting all five penalties through Ronaldo Pereira, Velito Costa, Joyson Coutinho, Aden Pereira, and Sanford Costa. Seraulim managed to convert three, with successful efforts from Ashley Fernandes, Floscio Fernandes, and Selvin Fernandes.
