Panaji

The state capital has completed the installation of 1,916 smart streetlights under the Smart City Mission, achieving a 32.47% reduction in energy consumption. The project, aimed at sustainable urban development, has led to estimated savings of 296,700 kWh annually, translating to projected cost savings of Rs 38 lakh per year.

The smart lighting system uses a dynamic dimming schedule and is expected to save up to 45% energy with future upgrades, including advanced LED drivers and SIM-based technology.

The implementation is ongoing in Ribandar and central Panaji, where installations are in the commissioning phase. The initiative is supported by a Smart Lighting Dashboard developed by IPSCDL and integrated with Individual Street Light Controllers (ISLC). The system is monitored in real-time by the Goa Electricity Department through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Altinho.

Each streetlight can be remotely operated, configured, and monitored using secure IoT-enabled communication. The system allows for instant fault detection—such as LED failure
or power disconnection—and enables individual lights to be maintained without activating the entire network. This reduces downtime, energy use, and maintenance costs.

Authorities say the system enhances public safety and urban illumination. “We are not only saving energy but also creating a safer and more efficient city,” said a senior IPSCDL official.
