Darwin: Bangladesh’s bowlers overshadowed Australia’s reunited ‘Big Four’ attack as the hosts were dismissed for 198 on the opening day of the first Test here on Thursday.
Hasan Mahmud claimed a career-best 6-55 while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain took two wickets each as Bangladesh’s disciplined pace attack made the most of a green-tinged, seaming pitch.
Steve Smith offered the main resistance with a fighting 71, but Hasan removed him as well as Australia captain Pat Cummins (9), Mitchell Starc (1) and Nathan Lyon to wrap up the innings in 53 overs.
Hasan had earlier dismissed openers Jake Weatherald (23) and Travis Head (22), while Ebadot accounted for Marnus Labuschagne (1) and Alex Carey (19).
Australia had reunited Josh Hazlewood, Starc, Lyon and Cummins in their frontline attack for Cummins’ second Test in 13 months.
Bangladesh reached 96-1 at stumps, reducing the deficit to 102. Mominul Haque (35) and Tanzid Hasan (32) were unbeaten after sharing a 60-run stand.
