AIFF pulls out of FIFA event to prioritise Oct 3 friendly
New Delhi: India have withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, choosing to prioritise their high-profile international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil in October, AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayanan said on Thursday.
“We have pulled out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup since we can’t play both Brazil and FIFA ASEAN Cup,” Satyanarayanan said.
India had initially accepted FIFA’s invitation and were drawn in Division 1 Group A alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The tournament is scheduled during the September 21-October 6 FIFA international window.
However, India’s October 3 clash against Brazil at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium created a scheduling conflict. The AIFF had explored the possibility of sending a separate or developmental squad for the ASEAN Cup but has now opted to withdraw and use the window for friendlies.
India are also reportedly exploring matches against teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cabo Verde and Iran among the sides being discussed, though neither fixture has been confirmed.
The withdrawal is a significant change from the AIFF’s earlier plans after it had signed the participation agreement. India, who failed to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, have struggled to secure regular high-quality opposition.
