Budumir strike keeps them on course for R32
Croatia kept their World Cup hopes alive with a gritty 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, with substitute Ante Budimir proving the difference in a must-win Group L encounter.
Panama made the brighter start and looked dangerous through Cristian MartÃnez and José Luis RodrÃguez, though Dominik Livakovic was rarely troubled. Croatia struggled to create openings and did not register their first shot on target until first-half stoppage time, when Martin Baturina forced Orlando Mosquera into a smart save.
Recognising the need for greater attacking threat, Zlatko Dalic introduced Andrej Kramaric and Budimir at halftime. The move paid immediate dividends as Budimir turned home Josip Stanišić’s low cross from close range in the 54th minute after excellent build-up play involving Marco Pašalić.
Croatia nearly doubled their advantage moments later, but Mosquera denied Pašalic before the winger blazed the rebound over the bar. Panama responded strongly and pushed for an equaliser, with Livakovć producing key saves to keep out Amir Murillo and Carlos Harvey as the pressure mounted.
However, Croatia’s defence held firm to secure a crucial three points. The victory lifts the Vatreni back into contention for a Round of 32 berth ahead of a decisive final group match against Ghana, while Panama’s second defeat in as many games ends their hopes of progressing.
