Kylian Mbappe nets a brace in their 3-0 victory
France produced another statement performance to cruise past Sweden 3-0 and book their place in the World Cup Round of 16, with Kylian Mbappe once again stealing the spotlight. After seeing an earlier effort ruled out for offside and another strike come back off the post, Mbappe finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime with a superb solo effort following a short corner routine.
Didier Deschamps’ side took complete control after the break as Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, finishing emphatically after being picked out by Michael Olise. Mbappe then put the result beyond doubt late on, latching onto another perfectly weighted Olise pass before delicately lifting the ball over the goalkeeper for his second of the night. Sweden threatened sporadically but rarely troubled France, who recorded a fifth consecutive World Cup match with at least three goals and advanced in dominant fashion.
