Panaji: The Goa Football Association has strongly opposed any move to use the PJN Stadium at Fatorda for cricket, with president Caitano Fernandes saying the venue is Goa’s only international football ground.
Fernandes made the remarks while responding to the Goa Cricket Board’s reported request to the government to use the stadium for cricket.
“I have a humble request to the Government of Goa. Goa has only one international football ground. That is the PJN ground at Fatorda, don’t let anyone eye the ground for cricket purposes,” Fernandes said.
He said the stadium had hosted several football matches in the last four years, including ISL and I-League games, while Goa had also recently hosted SAFF matches.
Fernandes said Goa was expecting AFC matches in the coming years and warned that taking over the PJN Stadium for cricket would be “a big disaster for football”.
“We are strongly condemn,” he said, adding that cricket have sufficient financial resources to built its own ground.
