Yug Prabhu shines against all odds

Despite being born with a hearing impairment that challenges him both on and off the court, Yug Prabhu from Goa has defied expectations to become one of the state’s most promising talents.

For Yug, the journey has never been straightforward. “I have a hearing problem in both ears, and it’s challenging during tournaments. When people or players shout, my ears start paining, and I lose focus. Sometimes, I can’t even hear the umpire’s score announcements,” he shared candidly. But instead of letting these hurdles define him, Yug has turned them into fuel for his ambitions, inspiring everyone around him. Despite these difficulties, Yug’s determination remains unwavering. “Other kids make fun of me and don’t want to be my friends,” he admitted. Yet, his focus remains on the game, driven by a desire to excel.

At just 9 years old Yug has shown exceptional promise. “I started TT as a recreational activity at the age of 6 years with my elder brother during the pandemic in 2021. However, I picked up all the strokes fast and was advised by the coach to continue my training as I had the potential to do well at state and national levels,” Yug said.

Balancing academics and intense training was initially manageable, but as his aspirations climbed, adjustments became necessary. “I was studying in Vidya Vikas Academy till Std 3 and managed studies and TT very well. I would have an early morning training session, attend school, and then train again in the evening. I wanted to perform on the national level, which requires much more intense training, so I shifted to open schooling,” Yug explained. Currently ranked No. 1 in Goa in the U-11 category, he is also ranked 4th in U-13 and 5th in U-15. He secured a bronze medal at the National Ranking Tournament in October 2024 and is consistent at national events.

Looking ahead, Yug is clear about his aspirations. “I have bronze medals for Goa, but now I want gold. I want to follow that by getting selected for the Indian team, winning gold medals, and ultimately bringing home an Olympic medal,” he stated.
