After a delay of over a decade, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 2.5 crore panchayat ghar for Assolna on Friday. The project is being undertaken under the Deendayal Panchayat Infrastructure Development Scheme.

Velim MLA Cruz Silva said the construction of a new panchayat ghar had been a long-standing demand of the villagers. “Since my election, it took over two years of effort to revive the project, as fresh estimates had to be prepared and the file had to be moved again for financial sanction and tendering,” he said.

The panchayat ghar will be built within the government primary school complex in Assolna. Silva added that the focus will now shift to completing the Chinchinim panchayat ghar project, which is awaiting financial sanction.

“The project is ready, and we are awaiting government approval for financial expenditure. Efforts will be made to lay the foundation stone for the Chinchinim panchayat ghar at the earliest,” he said.

The project was initially tendered for Rs 1.5 crore twice, but failed to attract contractors, as the amount was deemed “unviable.”
